Hydration and Hot Yoga: What to Drink Before, During, and After Class

Proper hydration is crucial for a successful and safe hot yoga practice. Sweating in our heated studios helps to detoxify your body, but it also means you lose a significant amount of fluid and electrolytes.

Before Class: The Foundation

Start your hydration strategy hours before you even step into our yoga studio. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially in the 2-3 hours leading up to class. Consider adding electrolytes to your water or having a small, light snack like a banana to boost your mineral levels.

During Class: The Right Fuel

During your yoga classes, it’s best to stick to sips of water. A large amount of liquid can cause discomfort and sloshing during your flow. Focus on drinking small amounts during breaks to replenish fluids and keep your energy up. Avoid sugary sports drinks which can sit heavy in your stomach.

After Class: Replenish and Recover

After your practice, your body needs to replenish the fluids and electrolytes it lost. Drink a generous amount of water to rehydrate, and consider a post-class drink with electrolytes like coconut water or a specialized recovery blend. This is key to helping your muscles recover and minimizing soreness.

Beyond Water: The Role of Electrolytes

While water is essential, electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium are equally important for muscle function and nerve signaling. These minerals are lost through sweat, and replacing them helps prevent muscle cramps, fatigue, and feelings of lightheadedness.

Staying hydrated is a non-negotiable part of your hot yoga routine. By following these simple tips, you can ensure your body is prepared for a great practice and ready for a smooth recovery afterward.
